NYC Will Apply Pesticide to Neighborhoods in Queens and Staten Island Tuesday – NBC New York

NEW YORK – Mosquito warning: New York City says its days are numbered.

The city’s Health Department will be spraying two counties Tuesday with adulticide, a pesticide used to kill adult mosquitoes. Officials are targeting neighborhoods in Queens and Staten Island this week.

Crews will begin spraying around 8:30 pm and will go until around 6:00 am on Wednesday. Here are the neighborhoods on the city list:

  • (Queens) Bayside, Bay Terrace, Beechhurst y Whitestone.
  • (Staten Island) Arrochar, Dongan Hills, Grant City, Midland Beach, New Dorp, New Dorp Beach, Old Town, South Beach.

Because insects return during the summer, spraying helps reduce the number of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases, like West Nile virus.

Trucks will be used to spray adulticide, which kills adult mosquitoes. The risk from applied pesticides is low to people and pets.

However, sensitive groups such as people with respiratory problems may be affected. To ensure that everyone remains safe, the Department of Health has provided advice during and after the application.

During the hours that crews will be spraying, people are encouraged to stay indoors whenever possible and close air conditioning vents if possible.

The city recommends that skin and clothing exposed to pesticides should be washed after spraying.

New Yorkers are also encouraged to protect their homes from mosquitoes and take precautions when away from home.

In the event of inclement weather, spraying will be delayed until Wednesday, July 27.
