NYC Speed ​​Cameras to Start 24 Hours on August 1 – NBC New York (47)

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that the city’s speed cameras will operate 24 hours a day beginning August 1.

Adams made the announcement Thursday afternoon along with Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez.

“Overnight and weekend crashes have become all too frequent in recent years, and we are so grateful that state lawmakers have heeded our call for 24/7 speed camera coverage of the city. week,” Rodriguez said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a state law last week that now allows the cameras to work during this time period.

The city’s 2,000 automated speed cameras were previously licensed by the state to operate only on weekdays, between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., on school days, missing 59 percent of fatalities. by traffic that occurred during the time they were turned off.

The new speed camera operating times will go into effect a month after a public awareness campaign that prepares drivers and all New Yorkers for the change to come.

That campaign began on July 1.

Earlier this year, Adams also announced a plan to redesign 1,000 intersections in New York City to protect pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers with better traffic signals and elevated crosswalks.

“Sadly, we know that reckless drivers are on our streets 24/7, so our cameras need to be on 24/7 as well,” said Deputy Mayor for Operations Meera. Joshi.
