New York City Mayor Eric Adams was with New York Governor Kathy Hochul Friday morning at a Manhattan subway station to reveal a new plan that seeks to combat crime in the city’s subway.
Since the announcement, at least 5 people have been stabbed on the subway in just over 24 hours.
The latest attacks add to a growing number of victims. Major crimes in transit are up 65% this year, an average of one victim every four hours, throughout the day.
Both Adams and Hochul acknowledge that people will not return to their offices after COVID-19 and that the city’s economy will not fully recover if people do not feel safe moving around the city. That was the impetus behind the plan. 17 programmed pages to take effect Monday that will add police and mental health teams to the system and more actively enforce laws already on the books.
But it will take time to implement it, and in the meantime, the violence does not decrease.
