NEW YORK – Mayor Bill de Blasio announced during his press conference Tuesday an agreement to connect New York City to renewable sources of electricity from Canada and from Upstate New York.
“This agreement will make a big difference and it is something that we have been working on for years and finally it comes, this means a greener future for New York City,” said the Mayor.
The mayor pointed out that the immediate goal is that by 2025 all the buildings and operations of the municipality use 100 percent renewable electricity and that it is “so we managed to change course.” The energy will be produced by hydroelectric plants and solar panels to combat climate change.
“This Climate Week we are connecting New York City to wind and solar hydropower from Canada and upstate New York, these green energy projects will create jobs and a more reliable power supply that is how we fight against climate change, ”said the mayor.
According to the mayor, these types of actions are as if a million cars were being taken off the roads.
In addition, it seeks to replace 50 percent of the fossil fuel electricity in all of New York City with renewable energy and in the process create thousands of union jobs and create a more reliable source of electricity.
The initiative, which was approved by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, will provide electricity service to thousands of homes and replace service at the Indian Point nuclear plant.
On the other hand, the mayor also announced that the Parks Department is creating more green spaces in the city, and in Queens it will invest $ 12 million to renovate the children’s park Charybdis in Astoria Park and $ 21 million in the creation of a new space, the park Gwen Ifill on Jamaica.
