NYC Pushes For Laid-Off Workers To Be Vaccinated And Rehired – NBC New York (47)

New York City is pushing to give city workers laid off earlier this year for not getting the COVID-19 vaccine a chance to get their old jobs back, if they get fully vaccinated.

In February, Mayor Eric Adams fired more than 1,400 workers who did not comply with the vaccination mandate established by his predecessor, Bill de Blasio.

Just under 600 unvaccinated non-Department of Education workers are receiving a letter with details, and DOE employees are expected to receive a letter later in the summer, a city spokesman said, adding that the 97% of workers are vaccinated and that the goal has always been “vaccination instead of termination.”

The New York Post first reported on the development.

It was unclear how many workers would be affected and no timetable for returning to work was disclosed.

The mandate required vaccination as a safety rule in the workplace. In March, Adams came under fire for exempting non-New York City athletes and entertainers from the city’s vaccine mandate, while he kept the rule in place for public and private workers.
