NYC offers resources for those who need financial advice – Telemundo New York (47)

For many New Yorkers the pandemic affected them financially and sparked the need to learn to manage financial life.

New York City offers free financial counseling for those looking to pay off their debts or manage their money more efficiently.

Due to COVID-19, in-person service is limited, but free confidential financial counseling is available over the phone. Interested persons will need to create an account on the financial empowerment portal.

The New York City Financial Empowerment Centers provide free individual financial counseling and training to help people achieve their goals by:

  • Manage money and establish a spending plan.
  • Contact creditors about existing loans, including student loans. Get tips on student loan debt during COVID-19.
  • Write letters to creditors to reduce payments or temporarily suspend payments due to difficulties.
  • Develop a strategy to minimize debt.
  • Access local, state, and federal emergency resources.
  • Open a bank account.
  • Separate personal and business finances.

The interested they can book an appointment online and create / log in to your Financial Empowerment Portal account. They can also call 3-1-1 to book an appointment.
