According to the NYPD, officers assigned to Brooklyn’s 90th Precinct lawfully stopped Kendall Floyd’s car near Humboldt and Debevoise streets around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday. It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the initial stop, but a police officer says Floyd allegedly opened the door and punched the officer in the process.

Floyd then allegedly started running, the NYPD spokesman said, and officers caught up with him near Broadway and Thornton Street, about three blocks from the initial stop. That’s where Floyd climbed onto a pole on the elevated subway tracks, according to the NYPD. He then jumped a “great distance” onto the roof of a building.

Video posted on Twitter captured that jump. People are seen on the street with their hands to their heads, saying, “Don’t jump! Don’t jump!” almost to themselves as the man positions himself on the edge of the tracks. Their faces then turn completely incredulous as the man leaps into the air above them and reaches the other side.

Some couldn’t help bursting into applause.

Authorities say Floyd sustained a leg injury in that jump and responding officers were able to take him into custody. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to be fine. The officer he allegedly hit with his car was also taken to a hospital and will be fine.

In addition to the assault and reckless endangerment charges, Floyd is charged with official misconduct, false impersonation, trespassing, disorderly conduct and violation of seat belt laws. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
