NEW YORK – New York City will invest $ 25 million in funding from PlayFair for city parks to be used to hire staff in the five boroughs, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday along with Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver and other officials.
In the fiscal year 2022 budget, the Council worked with the Administration and the Coalition PlayFair, leadered by New Yorkers For Parks, in the allocation of $ 25 million to the New York City Parks Department budget.
During the pandemic, city parks were enjoyed like never before, and this allocation will make parks cleaner, safer, and more accessible year-round.
Specifically, the 2022 budget will support 150 maintenance workers and landscapers, 80 more Park Enforcement Patrol officers, 50 urban park rangers, 46 forestry employees, and 15 staff members from GreenThumb.
“As we enjoy the New York City summer, we remember how important green spaces are to the health and well-being of our residents,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “As part of a recovery for all, I am delighted to be able to partner with the City Council to invest additional resources to maintain our beautiful parks and make them safe and welcoming places for all New Yorkers to enjoy.”
The $ 25 million in funding from PlayFair will serve the administration’s goal of creating and maintaining safe, clean and equitable green spaces for every New Yorker. To help advance this mission, this spring the Parks Department hired an additional 2,500 workers as part of the City Cleanup Corps.
“Our city’s recovery is in full swing and we are grateful to the Mayor and City Council for this allocation of PlayFair $ 25 million, which facilitated the hiring of more than 340 parks employees, ”said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver. “As we emerge from the pandemic, these funds provide us with the resources we need to remain steadfast in our commitment to providing equitable access to quality parks and green space for all New Yorkers – this will truly be New York’s summer.”
