New York City will invest $236 million in the Summer Youth Employment Program to fund 100,000 jobs, Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday.
The Democrat pointed out during a press conference that this program, which is aimed at young people between the ages of 14 and 24, is “crucial because every young person should have the opportunity.”
According to the mayor, this is the largest investment the city has had in the program that began six decades ago.
The program, according to the mayor, especially helps young minorities from vulnerable communities and at the same time is a tool to combat the wave of firearm violence that is plaguing the Big Apple.
What is this program about?
The Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) is the youth employment program that connects New York City youth between the ages of 14 and 24 with opportunities for career exploration and paid work experience each summer.
Participants have the opportunity to explore their interests and career paths, develop job skills, and participate in learning experiences that help develop their social, civic, and leadership skills.
What kind of activities can I do with this program?
Through these 6-week summer opportunities, participants will be exposed to jobs in different areas within corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations, city agencies, and other companies. Mayor Adams added that it is not just about a job but about giving them the necessary tools to be hired in the future.
When can I enroll in the program?
The summer employment program will be available beginning in the spring. For information visit this website.
