New York City will install checkpoints at certain bridges and crossings to enforce quarantine restrictions prior to Thanksgiving.
Sheriff Joseph Fucito said Tuesday that among the actions authorities will take are spot checks on passengers alighting from buses coming from other states.
Fucito said test and trace teams will be scattered throughout the city to enforce the 14-day quarantine restrictions.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the new traveler measures earlier this month, which require visitors to test negative for COVID-19 before arriving in the state. In addition, they must take another test once in New York territory.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that those who violate quarantine restrictions could face fines of up to $ 2,000.
The city requires visitors to complete a travel form upon arrival at the airports, Penn Station, and the Port Authority bus terminal, in addition to using the self-test kits available at those locations.
The state, which was the center of the outbreak in the spring, reported an average of 1,476 new cases over a seven-day period on Tuesday.
De Blasio said Tuesday that the positivity rate is 3.17% in the city, but he fears that the percentage will rise during the holidays.
