NEW YORK – A couple was injured and the suspect died after a home invasion in Brooklyn on Thursday afternoon, law enforcement sources told our sister network NBC New York.

A man tried to make his way inside a Williamsburg apartment on Broadway where a married couple lived, according to two senior officials with the New York City Police Department. That man pulled out a gun and shot both the husband, that according to police officers, he was trying to keep the gunman and the woman away.

The woman inside the apartment then took a firearm that belonged to her husband and shot the suspect who was on the other side of the door and still trying to enter the home, according to senior law enforcement officials.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The man in the apartment was in critical condition, police sources said, while the woman was also injured.

In October 2019, there was a report of a break-in and robbery in the same apartment, where the same woman lived. He called police about an armed robbery, senior New York police officials said, in which two suspects stole his wallet with cash inside.

Suspects in the robbery reported in 2019 were not caught. An investigation is underway into Thursday’s deadly home invasion.
