NYC Hispanic community reacts to DACA reopening

During the week, a federal judge ruled that President Trump’s administration has an obligation to accept new applications for the DACA program.

The decision restores hope to many young people dreamers that depend on this initiative.

We have the report, live from Jackson Heights where our reporter spoke to one of these ‘dreamers’.

Previously, the Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Chad Wolf, indicated in July that new applications for access to the benefit of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and that renewals would only be valid for one year.

But last month, a federal court ruling invalidated this measure and declared that Wolf was not in full power of his duties when he issued the order.

Now, DHS must publish a notice within three days of the ruling.

The decision says that new applications must be accepted and that DACA recipients must receive a work permit for two years.

According to Yatziri Tovar, an activist with the Make the Road NY organization: “Young people who previously could not apply for DACA can now apply, renewals continue. So, It is a great victory, we have been in the courts for more than three years fighting, trying to fight for DACA. “

In a statement, New York Attorney General Letitia James said: “Every time the current administration tries to use young immigrants as scapegoats, it devalues our nation’s values. The court order makes clear that fairness, inclusion and compassion matter. “
