NYC Health Officials Confirm First Measles Cases of 2023: Urgent Call for Vaccination

NY. NYC health officials confirmed last weekend the first cases of measles in this city this year, urging parents to vaccinate their children against the disease.

Tens of thousands of minors of Dominican origin reside in the Big Apple.

Two cases have reportedly been reported in NYC and both are travel-related and were not due to local transmission.

According to New York health officials, six cases were reported in 2015, and one case in 2016. During the Covid-19 pandemic, no cases were reported between 2020 and 2022.

NYC remains ahead of national averages in rates of vaccination. During the 2022-23 school year, 97.3% of children had received the two-dose MMR vaccine compared to national averages of 93.1%.

Nationwide, measles cases are increasing, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Since January 1, a total of 41 measles cases have been reported in 16 states. Last year, 58 cases were reported.

Early symptoms of the disease include fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. Three to five days after a person experiences initial symptoms, a rash of red spots appears on the face and then spreads throughout the body.
