NYC Ferry, the other way to get around New York

Since May 2017, New York has a new means of transport: the NYC Ferry. These ferry lines are an opportunity to discover New York in a different way!

What you need to know about NYC Ferry lines

  • To get around New York, it’s not just the subway and buses: New York also invites you to use the seaway! You can cross New York Bay aboard the Staten Island Ferry, take a New York Bay cruise or take the new NYC Ferry lines.
  • This company was launched in May 2017 and today it offers 6 lines connecting Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx and Brooklyn.
  • NYC Ferry ferries are primarily used by New Yorkers: the lines offer residents a way to save time on journeys that are not directly provided by subways and buses.

How to take the NYC Ferry?

  • If you are leaving from Manhattan, you have two possible departure points on the East River: Pier 11, at Wall Street, and the pier at the end of 34th Street, in Midtown.
  • Please note: NYC Ferry operates independently and MetroCard is not accepted on board ferries! You must therefore buy a separate ticket each time: count $ 2.75 per trip.
  • The fact that the NYC Ferry lines are not included in the MetroCard deters many tourists who do not want to spend an additional $ 2.75 on transport. Still, it’s pretty darn worth it and I strongly encourage you to take a NYC Ferry ferry at least once during your stay!
  • You can go up the East River to the Bronx or cross New York Bay to the Long Island peninsula, passing under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Routes that are not offered by cruise lines.
