NYC Expands Meal Delivery Services for Families Affected by Bronx Building Fire – NBC New York (47)

Bronx families affected by the devastating fire nearly two months ago that claimed the lives of 17 residents will continue to receive food assistance thanks to a new partnership, Mayor Eric Adams announced Saturday.

Culturally sensitive meals have been delivered to those affected by the January 9 fire through the work of World Central Kitchen and The Hoodspitality Group; the latter took over until the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City and the New York State Association of Latino Restaurants, Bars and Lounges were ready.

The Bronx Borough President, Vanessa Gibson, assured the help of The Hoodspitality Group until the new city association could be established after World Central Kitchen focus on helping Ukrainian refugees, the mayor’s office explained.

“Knowing they don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from can make their day complete, and these New Yorkers can trust their city has their back. New York stands ready to provide affected families with any support they need,” he said. Adams in a statement.

All 17 victims of the fire, many from Gambia, died of smoke inhalation. Authorities say an electrical heater failure started the blaze, and a door left open allowed smoke to spread throughout the building.
