The New York City Council overwhelmingly approved a series of measures to make housing subsidy vouchers accessible to more New Yorkers.
This as a way to help those who do not have a home, and at the same time, avoid overcrowding in municipal shelters.
One of the pieces of legislation would remove a rule that requires people to stay in shelters for 90 days before they can apply for housing vouchers.
“Today, we vote for bold CityFHEPS reforms, addressing homelessness and eviction prevention. Proudly sponsoring bills to ease the strain on shelters, preserve homes, and support families. Together with advocates, we are determined to make a difference,” councilor Pierina Sánchez wrote in a message on social networks.

Another lowers the income level of eligible individuals and eliminates work and source of income requirements.
The full council voted on the initiatives with 41 votes in favor and 7 against. They were unanimously approved on Wednesday at a meeting of the general welfare committee.

Mayor Adams’ government opposes the changes, saying the proposals will cost the city billions of dollars due to increased demand.
They also ensure that the expansion of eligibility could generate delays in the system.
However, the legislations have enough votes to override a possible Adams veto.
