Jorge Lara is the 100,000th patient of NYC Cares, New York City’s health insurance.
“But as a result of having the joy of discovering this blessed NYC Care program, my life changed. I am happy because I receive the care, the love, the medical attention, that is, what more can I ask for?” said Jorge Lara.
The program NYC Care provides medical care regardless of salary or immigration status through the New York public hospital network.
The initiative was launched in 2019 and has since played an important role in providing care to those most in need during the pandemic. It is announced that there are already 100 thousand beneficiaries but the work continues.
“Let everyone know that they have access and little by little we reach 100,000 members and there we are, we will continue fighting if we reach 200,000, so be it,” said Jonathan Jiménez, Senior Director of NYC Care.
“Check out footage from today’s #NYCCare event where we enrolled our 100,000th member! NYC Care guarantees health care services for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay,” reads a social media post from the NYCHealthSystem.

The achievement was also shared with local organizations that help promote the program. One of them is NICE, located in Jackson Heights.
There are almost half a million people who can apply for the program but have not yet done so.
Some immigrants, like Jorge, go years without seeing a doctor because they don’t have the resources. This program not only helps with doctor visits but also with medications.
“Thank you, infinitely thank you for all that love and financial support in health and everything you have given me,” concluded Jorge.
