NYC cabs suddenly hike fares 23% after 10-year freeze

New York, Nov. 16. New York’s famed yellow cabs, which had fares frozen for a decade, are suddenly raising their public fares by 23 percent after approval from the city’s mayor’s office, which also hiked fares for Uber and others similar companies.

All elements that add up to a taxi fare – flag down, rush hour surcharge, night surcharge, etc. – will increase by a total of an average increase of 23%, as approved by the Taxi and Limousine Commission on Tuesday.

The flat rate from Manhattan to JFK Airport, the busiest in the country, also rises from $52 to $70, plus taxes and tips (usual in the service).

As for on-demand rental vehicles, their per-minute rates will increase by 7.8%, the first increase since 2018.

The entry into the market of Uber and other similar companies has been a serious blow to taxi drivers, to the point that 47% of the 13,500 licensed taxis in the city are currently out of circulation due to not being able to pay for maintenance and petrol costs more competition from those applications, according to the Gothamist.com portal.
