NYC between zones ‘substantial’ risk of Covid transmission

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced new recommendations for vaccinated people to return to wearing masks indoors in areas where the coronavirus is on the rise, and parts of New York are among high-risk areas.

The agency also recommended the use of indoor masks for all teachers, staff, students and visitors to schools, regardless of vaccination status, citing new information about the ability of the Delta variant to spread among vaccinated people.

The CDC released a map of the United States with four transmission designations: high, substantial, moderate, and low, and parts of New York are identified as areas of substantial transmission, meaning the recommendations would apply to New York.

In New York City the risk appears to be “substantial,” with Staten Island “high,” but with the exception of Green County which is “substantial,” the rest of the state is moderate or low.

There were immediate reactions to the CDC guidance. Governor Cuomo noting that the state is studying the recommendations and instructions will be issued at the state level soon.

“NY went from the highest positivity rate to one of the lowest by staying smart and following the science,” the governor wrote in a message on social media. “We are closely reviewing the new CDC recommendations.”

Others like the councilman of Manhattan, Mark Levine, called that even the vaccinated population wear a mask when they are indoors. This according to Levine, because a vaccinated person can carry the virus and runs the risk of infecting others, particularly children or people with previous diseases or risks.

“The CDC just called for a return to indoor mask use in parts of the US where covid is on the rise,” Levine noted. “Let’s be clear: Covid is emerging in New York City.”

“We need the indoor mask mandate to be renewed here as soon as possible,” the message added.

The councilman also put another message on twitter in which he takes the CDC map of the city of NY with its risk colors.

“The CDC encourages the use of indoor masking in locations with ‘high’ (in red below) or ‘substantial’ (in orange) transmission levels,” Levine writes.

“Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens are in orange. Staten Island is red,” he adds.
