NEW YORK – Beaches will be closed for a third day in Brooklyn and Queens due to safety concerns caused by Tropical Storm Ernesto passing along the coast of New York City.

Initially, swimming was prohibited at beaches in those areas through Sunday, but city officials extended the closure to Monday due to an extended threat of rip currents.

Lifeguards were still working on the beaches over the weekend and additional park staff were available to supervise. Jacob Riis Beach, although managed by the National Park Service, was also closed to swimming.

In addition to potentially deadly rip currents, forecasters predicted ocean rises of up to 6 feet and wind gusts of 12 mph.

“Our main goal is to keep New Yorkers safe, and as the effects of Tropical Storm Ernesto approach New York City, we will be closing our oceanfront beaches in Queens and Brooklyn this weekend to to protect New Yorkers from dangerous currents,” said Mayor Eric Adams in a statement Friday night.

The entire tri-state coast has been threatened for hazardous conditions as Ernesto passes through our area.

Expect dangerous rip currents and large waves (up to 9 feet in parts of Long Island) over the weekend. (Here’s why rip currents are so dangerous and what to do if you find yourself in one.) Strong wind gusts near 30 miles per hour are possible in some areas of the Jersey shore.

Ernest’s waves, onshore wind, and a nearly full moon will combine to produce higher than normal tides, beach erosion, and increased coastal flooding in all normal low-lying areas.

The system made landfall in Bermuda on Saturday morning as a Category 1 hurricane, hitting the island before continuing north towards Canada.

In New Jersey, state officials warned beachgoers to watch for rip currents and keep their feet in the sand until a lifeguard was on duty.
