New York City beaches will be closed to swimmers on Saturday, Sunday and Monday due to dangerous conditions expected as Tropical Storm Henri passes through the area, the Parks Department reported Friday.
Dangerous rip currents with 2- to 4-foot swells are possible on Atlantic Ocean beaches, according to the National Weather Service.
Red flags and closure notices will warn people not to swim, Parks Department officials said.
“We take the protection of all visitors to the park seriously. Out of precaution for the dangerous conditions that are forecast, we have decided to close all beaches in the city for swimming, “said New York City Parks Acting Commissioner Margaret Nelson. “While surfing will still be allowed, lifeguards will not be on duty, and we urge all New Yorkers not to risk their lives by ignoring this guideline.”
Tropical Storm Henri could become a hurricane before making landfall over the weekend. As of Friday, it was unclear whether Henri would make a direct hit on Long Island or New England. In any case, strong winds and rip currents are expected in our area.
