NYC and Tri-State Juneteenth Celebration Event Guide – NBC New York

NEW YORK, NEW JERSEY AND CONNECTICUT — June 16 celebrations will take place across all five boroughs and the tri-state area this weekend in honor of the newly recognized federal holiday.

“Juneteenth” marks the day in 1865 when the Emancipation Proclamation was presented to enslaved people in Texas, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued it.

This year will be the second that the United States recognizes the day as a federal holiday.

Here are some of the upcoming events in honor of this year’s celebration:

Manhattan

Broadway celebra Juneteenth

Duffy Square, Broadway in between 45th & 47th Streets, Midtown, Domingo, 12 a 1:30 p.m.

Cost: free.

African-American artists, and allies, from a variety of Broadway shows will perform their own works, including songs, dances and poetry, as well as live music.

Juneteenth March/5K Run/Walk/Skate

It starts at Engineers Gate in 90th Street & 5th Ave, Domingo, 12 a 2 p.m.

Cost: Payment is optional for registration, a $25 donation is recommended.

Originally founded as The Juneteenth March in 2020, a peaceful march from Harlem to City Hall, it highlighted the wide range of injustices and lack of reform for Black residents in New York City and across the United States. The march has since become the Juneteenth March/5K Run/Walk/Roll. Following its change in purpose, all proceeds are now donated to fund the Harlem Community Center, which is a community center offering services from over 30 community organizations.

Celebrating Black Artists of the LGBTQIA+ Community at “The Center”

7th Avenue y Greenwich Avenuedomingo, 12 a 5 p.m.

Cost: free.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center (commonly called “The Center”) has been known as a safe space and resource center for the LGBTQIA+ community since 1983. They continue their Pride Month celebrations with Black of Center: to Juneteenth Block Festival featuring LGBTQIA+ African American artists, storytellers, small businesses, vendors, as well as interactive activities such as art workshops, readings, DJ Jamz musical ensembles, and community member discussion forums.

There will be a free community screening of THE BIG PAYBACK by Color Farm, co-directed by Erika Alexander and Whitney Dow.

Summer of Soul (... O cuando la revolución no podía ser televisada)
Marcus Garvey Park, viernes, proyecciones empiezan a las 8 p.m.

This Friday Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Couldn’t Be Televised) will return to Capital One City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage to open its season of shows in neighborhood parks, commemorating June 16.

Brooklyn

13º Festival Anual Juneteenth NY 2022

Linden Park in Linden Blvd. & Vermont St. in East New York, June 18, 10 am to 6 pm, Prospect Park at the main entrance – Lafayette Memorial – Prospect Park W & 9th Street, domingo, 10 a.m. a 6 p.m., online, viernes, 9 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Cost: free.

This three-day festival begins on Friday. Mind, Body and Soul Health and Wellness Day is the first event when the celebration kicks off its virtual summit on Friday and continues in person for the rest of the weekend with performances by local talent and vendors presenting a selection of locals, blacks – own restaurants. There will be basketball clinics with The Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, a fashion exhibit and more.

By honoring Juneteenth

Museo de Brooklyn200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights, domingo, 12 a 6 p.m.

The Brooklyn Museum is honoring Juneteenth with a full day of activities. Since Juneteenth coincides with Father’s Day, this year’s event will feature activities for the entire family.

New York City Liberty Day/Juneteenth Celebration at Grand Army Plaza

10 Grand Army Plaza, Brooklyn, NY 11238, to the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library, Sunday, press conferences at 9 am, celebration and festivities from 8 to 11:30 am

Cost: free.

The family event will include spoken word artists, poets, and musicians.

Queens

André De Shields as Frederick Douglass: My Eyes Have Seen the Glory

Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd, Flushing, domingo, 2 a 8 p.m.

Cost: $40; $30 members and seniors; $20 students; $10 children under 12 years

Tony, Grammy, and Emmy Award winner and Hadestown star André De Shields performs an excerpt from his solo work and one-man show “Frederick Douglass: Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory.”

Juneteenth: story time

Queens Public Library, Richmond Hill, 118-14 Hillside Avenue, Richmond Hill, Saturday, 11 to 11:30 am

Cost: free.

Children and caregivers are welcome to the Queens Public Library for a special storytime to learn more about Juneteenth through picture books.

Screening of The Princess and the Frog at the Museum of the Moving Image

Museum of the Moving Image , 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria, friday to sunday: Friday 2:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Cost: $15; $11 seniors 65 and older and students 18 and older; $9 ages 3-17.

The Museum of the Moving Image is celebrating June 16 with a film screening celebrating black heritage, including screenings of Disney’s 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog, which features the first African-American princess of Disney, Tina.

The Bronx

Second Annual Juneteenth Family Day Anniversary

Pelham Bay Park, Middletown Road & Stadium Avenue, Bronx, domingo, 11 a.m. a 4 p.m.

Cost: free.

This family-friendly event includes events like arts and crafts, face painting, live performances and more.

Juneteenth Celebration and Ceremony at Van Cortland Park Alliance

Van Cortlandt Park, 242nd Street and Broadway, Bronx, lunes, 6 a 7:30 p.m.

Cost: free.

Van Cortlandt Park Alliance commemorates Juneteenth with performances, including music and spoken word. After the performances, you can follow a drumming procession to the Enslaved African Cemetery for a libation ceremony, honoring the memory of enslaved people.

Staten Island

Juneteenth Freedom Parade

Starts at 85 Snug Harbor Rd. at 8:30 am and ends at 10 am, Saturday.

Cost: free.

The Jubilee Collective will host the first Juneteenth Freedom Parade on Saturday. Everyone is welcome to share in the joy of seeing or walking in the parade.

Juneteenth Freedom Festival

The Staten Island Children’s Museum on Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Cost: free.

Grammy-nominated music and social justice artist Fyütch will perform behind the Museum on the South Meadow of the Snug Harbor Botanical Garden and Cultural Center as part of the Juneteenth Freedom Festival organized by Jubilee Collective in celebration of Juneteenth.

New Jersey

NEWARK: Newark Art Museum Juneteenth Festival Honoring Harriet Tubman

Washington Park (soon to be called Harriet Tubman Square), in front of NMOA (49 Washington St., Newark), Saturday, 12 to 5 pm

Cost: free.

The Newark Art Museum is hosting an outdoor festival honoring Harriet Tubman, where guests can decorate ceramic tiles that will later be used to create the Harriet Tubman Monument in Washington Park. Jacari Harris, Executive Director of the George Floyd Foundation, will speak and performances by Black artists and dancers will be scheduled throughout the day.

MAPLEWOOD: Festival MAPSO Juneteenth

Memorial Park (580 Valley St.), Saturday, 5 to 9 pm

Cost: free.

MAPSO (Maplewood & South Orange) will host a festival that will include readings and performances by Ras Heru, Donyah Michelle, Rachelle Parker, SOMA Justice, Jané, Autumn Jones and more. A fireworks show will close the night.

BLOOMFIELD: Black Owned Business Festival

In between Bloomfield y Glenwood Avenues yLackawanna, Saturday, 12 to 6 pm

Cost: free.

Black-owned businesses hold Bloomfield’s second annual June 16 celebration. Throughout the day, visitors will take part in live inspirational services, dance classes and musical performances. Area hairstylists will pay tribute to Madam CJ Walker at The Giveback Hair Show.

Connecticut

WEST HAVEN: West Haven celebra Juneteenth

Brent Watt Park, Saturday, 11 am to 2 pm

Cost: free.

The City of West Haven is celebrating Juneteenth with an event featuring local vendors, music, food, and a talent show. Learn the story behind Juneteenth and celebrate with local residents and officials.

OLD LYME: Jazz and Poetry Event: Juneteenth

Florence Griswold Museum, Saturday, 2 to 4 pm

Cost: free.

The June Nineteenth Celebration takes place on the museum grounds and features music by the Nat Reeves Jazz Quartet and readings by Witness Stones poets Marilyn Nelson, Kate Rushin, Rhonda Ward and Antoinette Brim-Bell, who created a verse tribute to those remembered. with Lyme Street plaques marking former sites of slavery and indentured servitude.

ENFIELD: Juneteenth Celebration Festival

Enfield Town Green, domingo, 11 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Cost: free.

UJIMA African American Alliance is organizing a Juneteenth festival.

Rockland County

HAVERSTRAW: The Juneteenth Celebration

Clinton Street, Saturday, 3 to 5 pm

Cost: free.

Haverstraw African American Connection is hosting its seventh annual celebration on June 16. There will be a parade, food, vendors, a kids’ zone, and live music with special musical guest, Mietta Stancil-Farrar.

SPRING VALLEY: ForTheCulture Juneteenth Festival

Memorial Park, domingo, 11 a.m. a 6 p.m.

Cost: free.

The ForTheCulture Foundation will host an event that will feature entertainment from local talent, food and drinks, as well as games and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
