It would be the emergence of Igor Shesterkin and Alexandar Georgiev which would have made this decision to the general manager Jeff Gorton.
Drafted in the seventh round in the 2000 auction, the 38-year-old Swede played 15 seasons with the Blueshirts. During his reign, he won the Vézina Trophy in 2011-2012 and helped the Rangers reach the Stanley Cup final in 2014.
In 889 career games, Lundqvist has maintained a 2.44 goals against average and .918 save rate. However, his performances have greatly diminished in recent seasons. In 2019-2020, he played 30 games, maintained an average of 3.16 and a save rate of .905.
