The Department of Sanitation presented an idea on how to reduce New York City’s ongoing rat problem
We’ve all seen (and heard, and even smelled) them all over the city, and the problem seems to be getting worse, but one city department offers a new idea on how to deal with New York City’s ongoing rat problem.
The Department of Sanitation wants to change the times that trash hits the sidewalks at night, so the trash isn’t sitting out as long, giving rodents less time to sniff and chase it.
Currently, trash can go to the curb at 4 pm the day before the scheduled pickup date. But the DSNY wants New Yorkers to start taking out their trash later at night, around 8 p.m.
His idea comes with one exception: if the garbage goes into a bin or container, it could be taken out a little earlier, at 6 p.m.
The department believes that by limiting the amount of time trash is out on the street, rats will be less visible and have less access to food.
The idea is just a proposal, for now. Any rule change would take six months to take effect, if approved.
