NEW YORK – New York State Will Count with a new website with essential resources and materials on vaccinating minors for parents and guardians of students and for school communities, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Wednesday.
The launch of this website is part of the state’s new campaign, called #VaxtoSchool, which seeks to increase vaccination rates against COVID-19 in students, families and school employees.
The new website will feature with information and responses to frequent questions made by parents and guardians, such as what are the risks that my child is not vaccinated, and also with signs that will help school leaders support the campaign in their communities.
In addition, the State launched an Instagram account, @VaccinateNY, to educate school-aged New Yorkers and their families about the COVID-19 vaccine. The Instagram page will provide accessible interactive content through easy-to-understand vaccine information, potential content partnerships, #VaxtoSchool social media design contests, and quick video explanations about the vaccine. DOH will also expand these digital education efforts across all of its channels, including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
“We have dedicated tremendous state resources to vaccinating eligible New Yorkers of all age groups, but initially the state focused on the most vulnerable citizens, and now we must focus on our youth,” said Governor Hochul. “Young people in New York are less likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19, but they can still spread the virus and we need them to take it seriously. The innovative new #VaxtoSchool social media campaign will help us spread the word of New York youth on the vital importance of getting vaccinated to keep friends, families and communities safe. “
As part of this effort, the governor also announced that new emerging COVID-19 vaccination sites #VaxtoSchool will be open in areas where zip code data shows that the vaccination rate for youth ages 12 to 17 is lower. than the state average.
A community medical professional will be available at each site to answer any questions parents and guardians of school-age New Yorkers may have. Alongside the new sites, #VaxtoSchool buses (mobile vaccination efforts) are being rolled out in convenient, school-centered areas across the state, such as public recreational spaces like basketball courts and parks. This will help make the vaccine available and accessible to school-age New Yorkers and their families.
