NY Finishing Trades Institute Opens Applications – NBC New York (47)

The Finishing Trades Institute in New York will be offering free training in August to 50 apprentice painters, decorators and wallpaperers, who, upon completion of classes, will have access to job offers.

The New York State Department of Labor announced Tuesday that the recruitment period will be between August 16 and 29.

Applications must be picked up in person at the Finishing Trades Institute of New York, located at 45-15 36th Ave., Long Island City. Applicants can do so between the hours of 9 am and 3 pm, Monday through Friday.

Applications will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis for 10 business days or until 500 forms have been issued.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED). Proof will be required at the time of registration.
  • Must be physically able to perform the job of painter, decorator, wallpaperer as determined by site assessments and personal statement (more information will be provided during a mandatory orientation).

YOU MUST SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT THAT YOU ARE CAPABLE OF:

  • Lift and move heavy attachments, equipment, and compounds up to 70 lbs.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, lifts and suspended scaffolds
  • You must take and pass a drug test, at the sponsor’s expense, after selection and at random during the apprenticeship.
  • Must be able to read, listen and understand instructions and warnings in English.

Apprenticeship programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards set by the commissioner.

Women and minorities are encouraged to apply for apprenticeship programs. Program sponsors must adopt affirmative action plans for hiring women and minorities.
