New York Democrats elected former congressman Tom Suozzi as their candidate to run for the seat of Republican George Santos, after he was removed from office for several scandals. Special elections are scheduled for February 13 of next year.
“Tom Suozzi has a proven track record of fighting for his constituents, fighting to safeguard our suburban way of life here on Long Island and Queens and always advocate for common-sense solutions to the real challenges that affect average Americans every day,” Nassau County Democratic Party Chairman Jay Jacobs and Rep. Gregory Meeks, Nassau County Democratic Chairman, said in a joint statement. Queens.
Suozzi, according to reported NBC News, represented the competitive 3rd District before leaving Congress last year to launch an unsuccessful bid for governor of New York, defeated by Kathy Hochul in a primary.
After the decision, the now candidate shared a statement on X, previously called Twitter:
“I will work day and night with both sides to achieve results for people, to make life here more affordable, safer and better. I’ve delivered on this district before and I’ll do it again by putting you ahead of partisanship. Let’s cut out the nonsense and get back to work”.
Hochul’s support
Governor Hochul met with Suozzi on Monday to pressure him to accept the Senate candidacy, sources told NBC News. In that meeting, according to the media, Suozzi specifically committed to supporting abortion rights and running a campaign that would not harm the Democratic Party’s brand.
Likewise, Suozzi also would have apologized to Hochul for his negative primary campaignaccording to the media.
“We had a good meeting and cleared things up, and I appreciate you taking the time,” Suozzi said in a statement after his meeting with Hochul. “At a time of strong political division, I offered to be another moderate voice as the Governor works to solve problems and make progress.”
Congratulations to Suozzi
Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chairwoman Suzan DelBene also congratulated Suozzi on the nomination.

Former state Sen. Anna Kaplan, who was also running for the Democratic nomination, announced she was suspending her campaign to endorse Suozzi. “We need to start 2024 off right, and that means electing Tom Suozzi to flip this seat and bring Democrats closer to the majority,” she Kaplan wrote.
