NY Democratic congressmen call for governor’s resignation

Several Democratic congressmen representing New York in Washington on Friday called for the resignation of Governor Andrew Cuomo amid accusations by half a dozen women that he sexually harassed them or engaged in inappropriate behavior.

Calls for Cuomo to resign include influential members such as Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The congresswoman from Queens and the Bronx released a joint statement with Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who referred to the dozens of Democrats in the Senate and state Assembly who have also called for Cuomo’s resignation.

“We believe these women, we believe the complaint, we believe the Attorney General and we believe the fifty-five members of the New York State legislature,” they said.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Jerry Nadler, also called for Cuomo’s resignation, saying he “has lost the trust” of the people of New York.

Other calls for resignation were those of Congressmen Grace Meng, Nydia Velasquez, Adriano Espaillat, Yvette Clarke and Mondaire Jones.

Lawmakers also pointed to issues surrounding the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project, as well as scrutiny from the governor’s office for failing to report the number of nursing home residents who died during the pandemic.

“His mismanagement of the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes and his subsequent attempt to cover it up has cost lives and decimated the public’s faith in our state government,” Jones said.

As of Friday morning, Representative Kathleen Rice was the only Democratic member of the New York House of Representatives delegation who had endorsed Cuomo’s resignation.

The embattled governor has said he will not resign amid growing calls to do so. Cuomo has insisted that he has never touched anyone inappropriately and has also asked for patience while Attorney General Letitia James conducts an investigation into the allegations.

Assembly Democrats launched a separate impeachment investigation Thursday. Top state Senate Democrats, including Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, have also called for Cuomo’s resignation.
