NY chooses its Christmas tree for the 2022 season – NBC New York (47)

NEW YORK – As the holiday season approaches, New York City has unveiled the iconic tree that will decorate Rockefeller Plaza this year.

It is an 82-foot Norwegian spruce and hails from the city of Queensbury, New York. The tree will be illuminated on November 30 in a live broadcast on NBC.

The tree, whose branches form a diameter of 14 tons by 50 feet wide, is believed to have been donated by the Lebowitz family of Glens Falls. It is believed to be between 85 and 90 years old.

It will be cut in a few days and transported approximately 200 miles south to Manhattan. After its tour, the tree will be dressed in more than 50,000 LED lights and crowned with a Swarovski crystal star.

The festive icon will light up the night of November 30 in a live broadcast on NBC. (At the end of the season, the tree will be felled and turned into lumber which will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.)
