NEW YORK – The Suffolk Police Department has warned parents to check the candy their kids collected on Halloween after a child was hospitalized for a marijuana candy.
Police said a 5-year-old Shirley boy was treated in the hospital after eating cannabis gummy candies received on a Halloween candy round.
The gummy candies, which were in branded packaging similar to Starburst candies and clearly labeled medicated and containing cannabis, were collected by a trick-or-treat child in the Suffolk County part of the 7th district, police said.
The resealable package was previously opened but the package did not appear to have been tampered with.
After eating the gummy candies, the boy was treated and discharged from Long Island Community Hospital on November 8, according to authorities.
At the moment, the police believe that this is an isolated incident.
Suffolk police urges parents to check their children’s sweets and read the labels. Anyone who finds possibly tampered with or drug-infused candy should call the police.
