The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded 78 experienced researchers a Vidi grant of 800,000 euros. This will enable them to develop their own innovative line of research over the next 5 years and set up a research group. dr. Robert-Jan Bleichrodt of Utrecht University will conduct research into the nutrition of mushrooms, which should result in a higher yield.
Mushrooms can be a sustainable alternative to meat consumption. Bleichrodt has found a link between the architecture of the fungal network that feeds the mushrooms and the mushroom yield. He will investigate which network architecture optimally transports nutrients to the mushrooms and how this is regulated. This should lead to a higher yield.
