Risks
Serious side effects have been reported following use of SARMs, such as liver failure, renal failure, high blood pressure, hair loss, rash, impotence, aggression, and visual impairment. The long-term health effects of SARMs are unknown.
These are experimental agents, of which it is not yet clear whether they are suitable for human use. Some of these agents have only been tested on laboratory animals. It is known that preparations often contain higher amounts of SARMs than the doses currently being tested in animal and human trials.
The NVWA sees an increase in the trade in these funds. Examples of SARMs found by the NVWA are:
MK-2866 (Ostarine) Ostarine is an experimental agent that may prevent muscle loss in cancer, loss of urine or bone loss. Ostarine is not yet on the market.
MK-677 (Ibutamore) Ibutamoren is an experimental agent that can stimulate growth hormone release. It is not yet approved for human use. Ibutamoren is not strictly a SARM, but is sold as such.
LGD-4033 (Ligandrol) Ligandrol is an experimental agent against muscle loss due to aging or disease and bone loss. It is not yet approved for human use.
RAD-140 (Testolone) Testolone is an experimental agent against muscle loss.
GW-501516 (Cardarine) Cardarine is an experimental drug, which is already proven to be too risky to come on the market as a medicine. It stimulates the burning of fat and is therefore recommended as a weight loss agent. Since cardarine may also stimulate the growth and development of cancer cells, trials have been discontinued. Strictly speaking, Cardarine is not a SARM, but it is sold as such.
YK-11 YK-11 is an anabolic steroid sold as SARM. Virtually nothing is known about the effects of this substance. It has not yet been tested on laboratory animals, but in test tubes it stimulates the growth of muscle cells.
SR-9009 (Stenabolic) Stenabolic is an experimental agent that makes the body use more energy and is therefore sold as a weight loss agent. This substance has not yet been tested on humans. Strictly speaking, stenabolic is not a SARM, but it is sold as such.
S-4 (Andarine) Andarine is an experimental agent against muscle loss. It has not yet been tested on humans. Users can develop vision abnormalities or night blindness.
S-23 S-23 is an experimental muscle loss agent and a potential component of a male contraceptive. It has only been tested in animal experiments.
