The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) removed a total of 435 dogs from a breeding farm in Eersel in Brabant on Tuesday and Wednesday. The breeder had already been discredited because the animals were not properly cared for.
The breeder had been instructed to pay closer attention to the animals. But during an inspection it turned out that he had not done enough.
Many dogs had health problems, didn’t get the right care or didn’t have the right cages. A spokesman for the NVWA says against Broadcasting Brabant that they found dirty pens and dirty drinking water. Many dogs were also wet, had a matted coat or mange and tartar.
It is also not the first time that dogs have been brought to this company. In December, 29 were also removed.
Breeder is allowed to keep healthy dogs
There are now 115 adult dogs and 44 puppies remaining in Eersel. The NVWA says there is no reason to take those animals with you, as these dogs were healthy. Inspectors are not allowed to bring healthy animals, the spokesperson explains to the local broadcaster.
“For all dogs, a careful consideration has been made as to whether keeping them in custody or staying at the location is the most suitable solution,” the NVWA explains. “Moving animals causes stress. Moving mother dogs with young puppies, for example, poses too great a risk to the puppies.”
The NVWA continues to “closely monitor” breeding.
