Nvidia’s Update for GeForce RTX 40 Owners: 12V-2X6 Power Cable Testing Information and Requirements

The 12VHPWR power connector and power socket caused quite a few GeForce RTX 40 owners some unpleasant moments, as it happened many times that the power connector and, in some cases, the socket on the video card melted due to the excessively broken or not perfectly connected power cable.

Nvidia’s official investigation eventually concluded that almost all of the cases were attributable to user error, but they nevertheless promised to try to make the 12VHPW “ecosystem” even more secure. The update was finally completed under the name 12V-2×6, in which the contact row containing the four contact legs, which carries out the communication between the given product and the power supply, was placed inside, so the cable must be correctly connected to the socket, only then will the video card receive full power.

The 12V-2X6 design is already used in some members of the GeForce RTX 40 series, and power supply manufacturers have also started implementing the new design. Among them is the Seasonic team, as the manufacturer’s workshop has produced a 12V-2X6 power cable with a connector rotated by 90 degrees, which interested GeForce RTX 40 owners can already test. For this, of course, you have to meet some conditions, and you have to be brave enough to risk the integrity of your GeForce RTX 40 series video card and system because of the new power cable.

According to the manufacturer, the 12V-2X6 Seasonic power cable can deliver a maximum power of 600 W, uses 16 AWG wires, and meets the requirements of the ATX 3.1 and CEM 5.1 standards. Since the power connector has been rotated 90 degrees, there is no need to break the cable to route it even for a wider video card, so that even the side panel of the case can be slid into place. Made with quality materials, the power cable has a reinforced construction and precision soldered contacts made of copper alloy. Cable stockings were even used for the sophisticated design.

For the time being, test copies of the cable in question can only be obtained in China, at the Chinese branch of Seasonic, for which you must register for the beta test and meet some conditions. On the one hand, the photo and serial number of the GeForce RTX 40 series video card must be attached, as well as a Seasonic power supply, of the supported types. The given power supply must be ATX 3.0 standard, so the Focus, Vertex, and Prime family copies with 12VHPWR support can be considered.

Applicants are invited until December 31, 2023, and then on January 5, 2024, the 100 “lucky” ones who will receive the 12V-2×6 power cable for testing will be drawn for free and with no wages. Additional information will be provided to those selected. Apparently, participation was not limited to China, i.e. applicants from other regions are also expected. The call was published earlier on the company’s Weibo social page, from where the above image comes from, which was originally written in Chinese, but is also available in an English version with a machine translation.

Is it a good idea to participate in such a thing? Not likely – even if the manufacturer agrees to take financial responsibility for any damaged hardware. Without the latter, it is not a good idea to apply as a tester, a free cable here or there.
