Nvidia set out to fight the miners. Performance

Sold-out warehouses and unavailable graphics cards forced Nvidia to take a radical step. It has decided to halve the mining performance of the new GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards. The company finally set out to fight the miners.

Already at the end of last year, a modern gold rush broke out. The ever-increasing prices of practically all cryptocurrencies lured individual miners to far more massive mining, which was reflected, among other things, in the hopelessly sold-out warehouses with modern graphics. As it turned out in recent days, some miners were so desperate that, in addition to graphics, they even started buying large gaming laptops on a large scale. And that seemed to be the last straw…

Introducing the GeForce RTX 3060 graphics

Only for GeForce RTX 3060?

That’s why Nvidia has announced on its blog that the new GeForce RTX 3060 graphics, which will be officially released on February 25, will halve the performance of cryptocurrency mining. In practice, the company promises from this step that it will be able to satisfy the demand of the players. “We make graphics chips for gamers,” Nvidia beats her chest in a blog post.

The limitations of mining performance are mainly due to the drivers of the prepared graphics. These are written to detect specific activities typical of mining and artificially reduce performance. Although the blog post only talks about GeForce RTX 3060 cards, it is possible that in a similar way it will reduce the mining performance of Nvidia on other graphics cards from the GeForce RTX 30 family. However, we will have to wait for more details.

The miners simply will not come

But even the miners will not come short, because Nvidia has produced a special CMP chip for them – Cryptocurrency Mining Processor. As the name suggests, it is designed specifically for the extraction of cryptocurrencies. It does not have any graphic functions, but it should be ideal for modern gold diggers.

In practice, the CMP has no graphic outputs, which should contribute to better airflow, as there will be fewer components on the card. Special cards will also have lower core voltages, which should increase efficiency. It can be assumed that CMPs will also be more cost-effective than acquiring a rig with game graphics. Nvidia will gradually launch four mining cards 30HX, 40HX, 50HX and 90HX, which should offer performance between 26 MH / s and 86 MH / s.

The result of this effort should be that the game graphics really remain with the players. And yet the miners will be able to continue their efforts.
