This month (probably around 1/20), Nvidia is set to start selling a special GeForce RTX 4090D graphics card that was created for China because the RTX 4090 model is subject to export restrictions. Although it wasn’t talked about that much, it apparently also applies to the professional RTX 6000 Ada card with an almost fully active AD102. Even here, Nvidia will make up for China with a special trimmed RTX 5880 Ada model. But this card should be available in other markets as well, maybe it will be interesting at a lower price.
Can Nvidia RTX 5880 Available the name itself refers to the fact that it is a cut-down version of the RTX 6000 Ada pro model, which is the most powerful model of the Ada Lovelace generation, with 142 active SMs and 18,176 shaders (except for the lower 300W TDP, so this card shows what Nvidia could release if wanted to make something like GeForce RTX 4090 Ti). The RTX 5880 Ada cuts performance a bit, apparently specifically to stay below a certain set threshold.
On the contrary, the RTX 5880 Ada has fewer units than the GeForce RTX 4090 compared to the 6000 model (not only less than the RTX 6000 Ada). The AD102 chip is still used, but it has 110 SMs active out of 144 (GeForce RTX 4090 contains 128 SMs). This gives 14,080 shaders, 110 RT cores and 440 tensor cores for the AI.
Nvidia states the theoretical performance in FP32 for this graphics at a value of 69.3 TFLOPS, which should correspond to roughly the same frequencies of around 2.5 GHz as the RTX 6000 Ada. But the consumption has decreased by a lot less (by only 15 W), the TDP is 285 W. Although the “TFLOPS” do not indicate this, maybe the card will actually run at better clocks than advertised, and the reduced number of units will partially compensate with a better clock.
The card does not seem to have any additional limitations compared to the RTX 6000 Ada, for example in the function of video decoders and encoders, all three multimedia engines in the GPU are active.

On the contrary, the memory card is not cut off. The memories have a 384-bit bus and a capacity of 48 GB. GDDR6 is used at an effective frequency of 20.0 GHz, which gives a throughput of 960 GB/s. It’s the same setup as the RTX 6000 Ada, this card also doesn’t use GDDR6X (perhaps due to factors like clamshell wiring and inline ECC implementation, but that’s just guesswork).

The card has now appeared on Nvidia’s website and can therefore be considered as officially put on sale. Nvidia probably won’t announce it loudly due to the context of the sanctions. While the GeForce RTX 4090D can only be found on Chinese websites, the RTX 5880 Ada is also listed on the other variants. So it seems that this card will not – at least officially – be kept as a purely Chinese model.
And it could therefore be for sale normally in other regions, including the EU. The fact that it retains the full 48GB of memory could make it interesting if it could be bought for less than the rather expensive ($6800) RTX 6000 Ada. In a number of applications that need such a large memory space, perhaps lower computing power would not matter so much.
