Almost anyone who has been looking for a graphics card in recent months can attest to the huge shortages that are currently at play. If we can count on a new rumor, Nvidia plans to release more soon Amper graphics cards production by downsizing the production of the Turing GPUs.
De Chinese techsite IT Home reportedly obtained this information from Asian sources within the company, such as by Wccftech was noticed. They argue that Nvidia is cutting the production of the RTX 2060 scaling back to make more room for the RTX 3000 GPUs.
According to the report, production of the older graphics cards will be halved to make the Ampere models more available.
End of the revival
At the beginning of 2021, Nvidia breathed new life into the RTX 2060 GPUs, shortly after their production was halted. The purpose of this was to briefly cope with the current stock shortages. Because of its relatively low production cost and decent quality, it seemed a fairly suitable model to fall in. As Wccftech points out, this also allowed them to make the crypto miners happy.
Nvidia is now also supplying custom graphics cards for cryptominers, so we suspect this will play into the possible decision to downscale production of the RTX 2060.
However, it is not yet clear what goes on behind the scenes, so we can only speculate. We wouldn’t think it a bad idea to see more RTX 3000 series GPUs hit the market.
The key question, of course, remains whether this increase in production would really make a difference. Given the severity of the shortfall, it doesn’t look like it will be resolved anytime soon, so we can only hope for damage control from the manufacturer. Nvidia itself already indicated that the stock of its graphics cards will be insufficient for the rest of 2021.
