Nvidia commented on the situation with laptops sold for mining

The news, which quickly circled the world, provoked a quick response. For example, the editors of the VideoCardz website commented on it as follows: „Chinese notebook maker supports GPU mining and NVIDIA does nothing“. We addressed the situation in the article:

Until its publication, no statement from Nvidia, an official comment from the company’s management, appeared, so we were quite surprised that the Czech representation of the company reacted specifically to our Czech article. I quote:

I am responding to the current article on mining: https://diit.cz/clanek/cinsky-vyrobce-prodal-1000-notebooku-s-geforce-rtx-3060-na-tezbu

I fully respect the personal opinions of the editors. Unfortunately, these articles seem to be taken by a lot of readers as facts that put us somewhat wrongly in the position of the architect of the current state.

Even in the current complex situation, NVIDIA seeks to ensure that GPUs reach primarily players or professionals and not cryptocurrency minerals. Although efforts, of course, have their limits. One of the proofs is, for example, the current statistics of popular GPUs from Steam, where the GeForce RTX 3080 already has almost the same share as the RTX 2080 or 2080 SUPER. https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/videocard

Laptops with a new generation GPU are in stock, for example, on Alza.cz and the situation is similar in other European countries. https://www.alza.cz/notebooky/18842920.htm#f&cst=null&cud=0&pg=1&prod=&par75=75-239805806,75-239806001,75-239805805,75-239806002,75-239805804,75-239806003

A general overview of the GPU availability situation can also be obtained from this interview: https://seekingalpha.com/article/4398578-nvidia-corporation-nvda-presents-19th-annual-j-p-morgan-tech-auto-forum-conference-transcript

I hope that the above-mentioned documents will help to shed some light on the situation for possible further articles. 🙂

Sincerely

We are glad that Nvidia has approached the situation in some way. However, it is not very clear to us how Steam’s statistics or Alza’s offer answer the question of Nvidia’s approach to a situation where a laptop manufacturer sells ~ 1000 of its GPUs directly to miners. Whether he considers such a situation to be correct, or whether he does not agree with it (which was the position in the last wave of mining) and will intervene in some way.

The claim that “efforts of course have their limits” is generally valid, but it is still Nvidia who ultimately decides whether or not the laptop manufacturer, which has sold perhaps 1,000 of its GPUs for mining, will deliver another batch. There are all the more questions about the fact that the event took place in a region that did not receive deliveries of almost any graphics card from Nvidia in January (source).
