BAKU – Nutritionists fear for the health of young people now that Max Verstappen is performing less well in Formula 1. “Verstappen has helped many young people to drink Red Bull, but the question is whether children will continue to drink enough Red Bull if Verstappen’s popularity decreases,” says nutritionist Elsbeth de Lange.
Max Verstappen’s performance in Formula 1 has been disappointing lately. In the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan this weekend, Verstappen finished fifth, last week in Italy he didn’t even get further than sixth place. “Young people are just susceptible to sports idols,” says nutritionist Elsbeth de Lange. “If Verstappen loses his role model, young people will be inclined to drink less Red Bull. In the long term, that can lead to lower blood sugar levels, with all the consequences that entails.”
De Lange hopes that Verstappen is aware of his responsibility as a sports influencer. According to the nutritionist, young people who drink little or no Red Bull can suffer from all kinds of health problems: “Young people who drink too little Red Bull get tired much faster. They can no longer easily stay up all night. In addition, reduced Red Bull consumption can lead to a taurine deficiency and a reduced caffeine level, especially in young children.”
