While fruits and vegetables are among the healthiest foods, the expert warned that some types of vegetables can cause blood sugar spikes.
Type 2 wise diet choices are one of the greatest defenses against high blood glucose levels. While eating sugary treats or alcoholic beverages obviously doesn’t mean good news for your level, fruits and vegetables can seem inconspicuous.
Some fruits and vegetables may not be the best choice for your blood sugar. Some of these healthy options have a high glycemic index (GI), which means they can lead to high blood glucose levels.
The glycemic index explains how quickly your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose, with foods rated as low, medium, or high.
“High GI foods break down quickly, resulting in a spike in blood glucose levels. People with diabetes call a sharp increase in blood sugar levels “jumps,” says dietitian Vasilisa Ponomareva, especially for MedikForum.
While fruits and vegetables tend to have a low GI, there are some exceptions.
Watermelons, potatoes and dried fruits rank high in this ranking.
“High GI foods can cause the body to produce a surge of insulin to counteract fast-acting carbohydrates, and a common consequence of this is feeling hungry for two to three hours, which may make someone want to eat more. People with diabetes should be careful with higher GI foods as their body’s ability to control blood glucose levels is reduced or absent.”
Other higher GI fruits and vegetables include: carrots, parsnips, beets, sweet corn, bananas, oranges, mangoes, grapes and pears.
