Director of Indonesian Political Parameters (PPI) Adi Prayitno commented on the statement by PBNU Chairman Yahya Cholil Staquf or Gus Yahya who said that NU would not be far from President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). According to Adi, this statement could be interpreted politically.
“Gus Yahya’s statement can be interpreted politically, of course, because this is a political year, this statement is linked to the fact that NU in the 2024 presidential election will have the same political pull as Jokowi regarding who the candidate will be. So Jokowi’s political choice is very likely to be the choice nahdliyin politics,” Adi told reporters, Monday (19/9/2023).
Adi said that NU’s political direction would be the same as Jokowi’s breath. Even though NU is not involved in politics, Adi believes that the NU congregation will be affiliated with Jokowi’s political tendencies.
“NU’s political direction will certainly be the same as Jokowi’s breath. That’s what the public will read, even though at the same time NU is not involved in politics, at least the NU congregation will be those who will be affiliated with where Jokowi’s political tendencies are headed,” he said.
Adi believes that NU has the same national political ideology as Jokowi. He said that not only Jokowi, NU is also close to the president who once led Indonesia.
“NU cannot be far from Jokowi in the context of having chemistry, understanding and having the same vision and mission and even the same national political ideology. Because NU is the largest Islamic mass organization whose political links and ties are very compatible with Jokowi as an inclusive President “, tolerant, open and of course characterized by a nationality that is pluralism, tolerance and upholds differences. Therefore, the NU madhab is quite close to the government. Whoever the president is, Jokowi is no exception,” he said.
“In fact, if we look at the history of this nation’s founding, especially after reform, NU has always been close, with mutual understanding, mutual interest with the authorities, with the government which at that time was victorious and in power,” he continued.
Gus Yahya says NU is not far from Jokowi
As is known, Gus Yahya said that President Jokowi was never far from NU. He conveyed this at the opening of the national meeting (Munas) of ulama scholars and the PBNU major conference (Konbes), Monday (19/9/2023).
“I fully feel that since starting this lesson, the President has never been far from PBNU. He has always been with PBNU up to this point and of course I want to convey to the entire NU family, God willing, NU will also never be far from Engineer Haji Joko Widodo,” said Gus Yahya in his remarks at the event.
Gus Yahya explained the direct touch that President Jokowi gave to PBNU. One of them, he explained the project to build educational facilities that Jokowi had given to NU.
“We also express our infinite thanks to the President. We are building a guiding project related to the development of higher education in the NU environment which we are placing at NU Yogyakarta University,” explained Gus Yahya.
Gus Yahya was reluctant to comment further when asked whether the statement ‘NU is not far from Jokowi’ included matters regarding presidential candidates.
“I don’t know about that. In principle, NU as an institution doesn’t get involved in that matter (the presidential election),” said Gus Yahya.
He then explained the context of NU’s closeness to Jokowi, because the President served on the Board of Trustees of the NU Family Benefit Movement (GKMNU). This movement program, continued Gus Yahya, will not stop even if Jokowi’s term as president ends.
“Now Mr. Jokowi is the GKMNU Board of Trustees. This is a program that we will continue to carry out without stopping, even beyond Mr. Jokowi’s term of office. Because this will become the basic pattern of NU activism. Mr. Jokowi is the board of trustees, who will not be far from all that, ” said Gus Yahya.
When asked whether it had anything to do with politics which is currently hot, Gus Yahya explained that the meaning of politics that Gus Yahya meant was a matter of government policy, not political contestation.
“Yes, that will later have a political meaning too. GKMNU are activities that directly involve citizens, so it will also be closely related to state or government policies. That’s where the political meaning is,” explained Gus Yahya.
“What agenda does the state have, what policies are there, what is intended for the lower classes, that is what NU will help deliver to the people,” he added.
