If you want to help people and want a job that is as varied as it is crisis-proof, training at the school for social care professions is the right choice. The number of classes has more than doubled in the last ten years. Because the school’s capacity became too small, it was rebuilt. In addition, the training areas have been expanded.
The so-called “extended training” is well received – it is completed in three years instead of two. “It is intended for women and men with small children, or for migrants who want to learn the German language more slowly,” explains director Susanne Schelling-Schnitzer: “but also for people who care for relatives and want to gain additional qualifications .”
“Social care is more than just care”
In working with the elderly and families, the prospective social workers learn to accompany, support and, if necessary, care for people in exceptional situations. “Social care means meeting people in the retirement home where they are; that one learns to do biographical work; that you learn to do cognitive training with them; that you learn to make everyday life livable and lovable for people,” says the director: “Social care is more than just care.”
Education not just for young people
The average age of the students is 29 years old – the youngest is 16 and the oldest is 58 years old. Many of them already have training in another profession and are reorienting themselves in the social sector. “My current working life is completely different to what I was used to, with 40 hours in the office and in customer service. Now I have different shifts, with weekend shifts and night shifts. “That’s very exciting,” reports 58-year-old Christian Hämmerle: “The dual training here at the SOB with two school days and three internship days in the home is also very interesting. You can immediately put what you’ve learned into practice.”
New nursing school
The shortage of personnel in nursing is also becoming more and more acute in Vorarlberg. There is a shortage of skilled workers not only in the elderly but also in the family sector. The school for social care professions in Bregenz – SOB for short – wants to counteract the nursing shortage and has therefore created additional classrooms and also offers more training opportunities.
Colorful mix of age groups and cultures
20 percent of the students are male – the SOB is currently attended by 250 people from 20 nations – with different age groups and cultures. For teacher Birgit Gieselbrecht-Lanz, there is particular potential in this good mix: “Because the different perspectives also stimulate discussions. And then you know why you should do something and why you should maybe take a step back in some situations – that you can’t and shouldn’t treat everyone the same because everyone is an individual that you have to and should look at individually. “
Generously funded training
In addition to the good career prospects, it is also the school costs, which are generously subsidized by the federal and state governments due to the shortage of nursing staff, that currently make training at school for social care professions particularly attractive.
