A nurse who killed seven babies in a hospital neonatal unit in England has been sentenced to life in prison.
Manchester criminal court sentenced nurse Lucy Letby to life imprisonment for killing seven babies and attempting to kill six others.
“It is a cruel and calculated crime that targets the smallest and most vulnerable children,” Judge James Goss said.
The 33-year-old Letby, who shocked British society, was recorded as Britain’s worst child killer and the fourth woman to be imprisoned for life in modern times.
For about a year from June 2015, Letby worked in a neonatal unit at a hospital in the north of England, killing five boys and two girls by injecting air into the body, injecting insulin, and force-feeding them with milk.
In some cases, both twins were killed or two of the triplets were sacrificed.
The surviving children also became severely handicapped.
Letby refused to attend the sentencing day trial.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would change the law to require murderers to appear in court when they are sentenced.
Police are investigating female crimes, believing that there is a possibility that Latby may have harmed dozens of more infants in addition to what has been revealed so far in two hospitals where he worked in the past.
In court statements prior to the sentencing that day, the baby’s parents poured out their anger as well as great sadness.
“The experience in the hospital was like a horror movie,” said the mother of a premature baby who was killed. “The funeral was held the day before the due date.”
A mother who lost her hard-earned twins through in vitro procedures talked about how much she wanted children, and a father who lost two of his triplets said, “Letby destroyed our lives.”
