A Nurse in the Netherlands confessed to colleagues that he had killed at least 20 patients with COVID-19.
The local Prosecutor’s Department said the nurse, named Theodoor V (30), said she felt sorry for the suffering of her victims while working as a pulmonary nurse at the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen.
V was arrested three weeks ago at his home in Veenhuizen, Netherlands, after confessing to staff while being treated at a mental health clinic near Drenthe.
Prosecutors said he had several times in conversations with mental health staff that as a pulmonary nurse at WZA, he had prematurely ended the lives of 20 patients during the coronavirus pandemic.
“The suspect is suspected of having taken medical action against a patient who he thinks is terminal and suffering, without instructions from a doctor,” quoted by the Daily Mail.
Her statement was taken very seriously by healthcare organizations, so they decided to report it to WZA.
The suspect has now been ordered by the Assen court to remain in jail for at least 30 days in pre-trial detention. To this day, V has only been able to keep in touch with his lawyer.
Authorities will continue to investigate the patient’s deaths between March 2020 and May 2022, with the criminal investigation expected to conclude in June.
“Experts are looking to see if discrepancies can be found in the medical records that can match the suspect’s statements,” the spokesperson said on condition of anonymity.
The victim’s family was also informed about the investigation two weeks ago, lawyer Sébas Diekstra told the ANP news agency.
“They have so many questions right now and the uncertainty about how their loved one died is torturing them,” Diekstra added.
“Of course, relatives also want proper research done, but at the same time they hope that the desired clarity will come soon.”
