Nurney GAA Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Historic Championship Win
Forty years ago, the Nurney GAA club etched their name into the history books, securing their first-ever adult championship title. On a recent night filled with nostalgia and camaraderie, the players and officials from that triumphant 1984 Junior B and Jack Higgins Cup winning team gathered at Martin’s of Kildoon to celebrate the momentous anniversary.
The reunion provided a platform for reminiscing and reconnecting, with laughter and shared stories filling the atmosphere. Club Chairman Seamus Deering warmly welcomed the attendees, paying special tribute to those members of the 1984 team who were no longer present.
Kildare GAA Chairman Mick Gorman graced the occasion as the special guest. He emphasized the significance of the 1984 victory, not just for Nurney GAA but also for the wider community. He also expressed his gratitude to Nurney GAA for their longstanding contributions to the County Board.

Between 1978 and 1984, Nurney GAA demonstrated remarkable consistency, reaching seven consecutive championship semi-finals and three finals. In 1984, Nurney GAA sealed their destiny, defeating Straffan by a resounding score of 1-12 to 0-5 in the Championship final. Their triumph continued in the Jack Higgins Cup, where they overcame Clougherinko in a thrilling replay, ultimately securing victory with a final score of 2-8 to 1-7.
