Nuremberg reaches the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup

1. FC Nürnberg is in the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup. The team of coach Markus Weinzierl only prevailed against league competitor Fortuna Düsseldorf on penalties.

1. FC Nürnberg is the only second division club to secure a ticket for the DFB Cup quarter-finals this year. Markus Weinzierl’s team beat Fortuna Düsseldorf 5-4 on penalties. After 120 minutes it was 1-1.

Dawid Kownacki made it 1-0 for Düsseldorf with a powerful header in the 33rd minute, Taylan Duman equalized seconds before the end of regular time. In the penalty shootout, Erik Shuranov finally converted the decisive last ball.

That’s how the game went

Four days after the derby defeat in Fürth (0:1), the hosts were the more active team in front of 25,216 spectators in the Max Morlock Stadium. Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier deflected a shot from Lino Tempelmann hard onto the crossbar (26′). Kastenmeier was also on hand against Kwadwo Duah (30′) and Christoph Daferner (32′).

The visitors then took the lead with their first chance. A cross from Emmanuel Iyoha headed in Kownacki. “There were hardly any fluid actions, both teams are unsettled,” said Düsseldorf sports director Klaus Allofs during the break on Sky.

Nuremberg initially remained decisive in the second round. Daferner failed again at Kastenmeier (52nd). On the other side, Ao Tanaka put the ball just over the goal (55′), Kownacki missed twice (60′, 69′). Substitute Duman saved Nürnberg in extra time, in which no goals were scored.
