Train instead of flight: the topic is not new, on the contrary. As early as the early 1980s, Lufthansa, at that time still a state-owned company, allowed passengers to travel by rail as a replacement for short-haul flights from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart to Frankfurt Airport.
Until 1993, Lufthansa even operated its own train for this purpose, the “Lufthansa Airport Express”, which was kept in the same colors as an airplane on the inside.
There will be no redesign of the ICE car design as part of the new cooperation between the badly ailing airline and Deutsche Bahn. On the other hand, the Lufthansa Express Rail network is being expanded.
New connections
Deutsche Bahn and Lufthansa already offer 134 feeder trains from 17 German cities to Frankfurt Airport every day.
Another five cities will be added in the second half of 2021. From July, it will be possible for the first time to travel to Frankfurt Airport with Lufthansa Express Rail from Hamburg and Munich, from which Nuremberg will also benefit.
There are two direct flights to and from Munich and Nuremberg twice a day in three and two hours, respectively, and without further stops to Frankfurt Airport – half an hour faster than today.
More sprinter connections
In addition, new Sprinter connections will celebrate their premiere from December. The train journey between Munich via Nuremberg to Cologne is shortened to under four hours.
