Nuremberg city beach opens on Friday (May 28, 2021): The sand is already there. The many deck chairs too. “Now all that’s missing is the right weather,” says Lorenz Kalb happily and throws himself back into the sweaty preparatory work. On Friday afternoon, the city beach on the island of Schütt starts its new season.
In the last few weeks Kalb and his colleagues have shoveled around 600 tons of the finest kaolin sand from the Nuremberg city beach to the island of Schütt in the heart of Nuremberg’s old town and set up around 1,500 deck chairs. “This time we left more space between the chairs because of Corona,” explains Kalb and speaks of a more airy feeling on the entire site.
“Corona protection area”: City beach opened in Nuremberg
In fact, the man-made holiday beach is almost like a mirage to many people in Nuremberg. While Lorenz Kalb’s team bravely distributed the sand and set up the 50 four-meter-high giant palm trees, the corona incidence values in the Franconian metropolis have almost shot through the roof. At times in Nuremberg it looked as if the number of Covid cases in the Franconian city did not want to plummet. Just in time for the start of the city beach, the long, seemingly distant, easing measures can finally come into effect in the Franconian metropolis.
