Police in the area India the northern part captured a youth leader from Partai Bharatiya Janata (BJP) in power and under the auspices of the Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modiregarding his comments via social media that are considered anti-Muslim.
As reported ReutersWednesday (8/6/2022), the arrest was made after the BJP spokesman’s comments, Nupur Sharmawhich is considered insulting the Prophet Muhammad SAW provoked public anger and protests from various countries, especially Muslim-majority countries, sparking a diplomatic furor.
Harshit Srivastava, who is one of the youth leaders of the BJP, was arrested by police in the city of Kanpur following communal tensions last week during protests by Muslims denouncing anti-Islam comments.
“We arrested a local politician for making inflammatory statements against Muslims,” said a senior local police official, Prashant Kumar, adding that at least 50 people had been arrested over the tensions in Kanpur.
There was no further explanation regarding Srivastava’s statement which led to his arrest by the police. There has been no response from Srivastava’s lawyer regarding this arrest.
Sporadic riots were reported in other parts of India after Sharma made controversial comments during a debate on local television. Sharma’s comments, which were considered insulting to the Prophet Muhammad, were also not explained further by the BJP or the Indian government.
Sharma has been investigated by the BJP’s disciplinary commission and removed from his post. Apart from Sharma, another BJP spokesman named Naveen Kumar Jindal was expelled from the party over his comments about Islam via social media.
