In Hamburg, the strike began in the evening. At the airports in Hanover, Bremen and Berlin, the ver.di trade union has again called on security personnel and other employees to go on warning strikes.
Due to warning strikes, passengers have to be prepared for significant delays and cancellations at several airports in Germany today. According to the trade union ver.di, the northern German airports of Hamburg, Hanover, Bremen and the capital’s airport Berlin-Brandenburg BER are on strike all day. This should also have an impact on other airports.
The union has called on security guards and other workers to take industrial action. Airports advised travelers to check flight status with their airline.
The warning strike at Hamburg Airport began on Sunday evening. “The strike started on time,” said ver.di union secretary Lars Stubbe of the German Press Agency. According to the airport, all 123 originally planned take-offs and at least 50 of the 121 originally planned landings in Hamburg have been canceled for Monday.
200 departures in Berlin canceled
At the airports in Hanover and Bremen, the walkout has been announced for 24 hours from midnight. According to ver.di, it can be assumed that no passenger aircraft will be able to take off or land today. In Hanover, 35 departures and 34 arrivals were originally planned, in Bremen 20 departures and 19 arrivals.
At the capital’s airport, the warning strike is scheduled to begin at 3:30 a.m. and last all day until 12:00 a.m. Around 200 departures have been cancelled. According to the airport, about 27,000 passengers are affected. The airport assumes that about a third of the approximately 200 planned landings will be canceled, said a spokesman for the airport.
According to the union, the reason for this is the unsuccessful collective bargaining for the payment of aviation security employees for working at inconvenient times. But negotiations for employees in ground handling services and employees in the public sector at federal and local level also played a role.
